Group Policies
Welcome to our group, we are so happy to have you join us! Please take the time to read the following group policies carefully. We adore our members and want to continue being able to provide amazing events while keeping our members safe and happy.
Profile Transparency
Transparency in this group is CRUCIAL. We are not an anonymous group of knitters. Many of our events will take place in members’ homes and we want everyone to feel safe participating. So when you join on Meetup YOU MUST UPLOAD A PHOTO OF YOUR FACE close enough so we can recognize you and so you can recognize us at events. We also REQUIRE YOUR REAL NAME on your profile- no usernames (KnottyKnitter12345 is really cute, but save it for Ravelry please). If either your picture, your name, or both are missing in your request you will not be accepted.
We are a Membership Group
While we do provide a number of free events for local knitters, we are at heart a membership group with annual dues and private events. When our events are posted they will be labelled in one of the following two ways, so read the event text carefully before you RSVP:
Membership Fees
Annual membership is $10 due every January. Membership fees are paid yearly. This fee covers the costs for our web site, Meetup page, and our charity projects. Dues can be paid in a number of ways:
Photography
It is our standard practice to take photos at all meetup events. By attending our events, you accept the possibility that your candid photo may be taken and/or posted on our Meetup or other social media pages pertaining to the group.
All our members are allowed to take photos at our events and post them to Meetup or our other social media pages. Please be aware that we pull photos for our newsletter from the ones posted by our members on Meetup, Facebook, and Ravelry and by posting your photos of our group events on these sites you are giving us permission to use them in the newsletter. The newsletter is a private publication for our paid members only.
Teaching
We welcome knitters of all stages in the knitting process to our group and are more than willing to help you with a specific issue you may be having. We have all been there and if you have a small problem our members are all too happy to assist. While we are willing to help we are not here to provide instruction on techniques or teach you how to knit. It is important to understand the difference between asking for help on a specific issue you're having, and asking someone to teach you for the duration of the meetup. This is a social group and our members are looking to relax and have fun and do not wish to spend the duration of the event teaching others.
If you are in need of more involved help with your project we are happy to give you some local options where you can take classes and attend group help nights. In addition, you can feel free to post your question on our Facebook or Ravelry group pages and if one of our members can help they will respond.
No Show Policy
We provide some great workshops and private parties for our members on a regular basis. These events are usually limited to a certain number of people and will sometimes require a supplies/materials or food fee to cover the costs. By not showing up to an event or cancelling last minute you have effectively taken a spot from another member who would have liked to participate and also placed the burden of the cost of your materials or food on the event host.
We understand that things happen, but we ask that if your plans have changed PLEASE UPDATE YOUR RSVP AT LEAST 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE. This will allow organizers to prepare for a firm RSVP count and open your spot to others members who want to attend. If a fee is required and we cannot fill your spot you will be responsible for the full amount due. In addition, if you make a habit of signing up for Knitwise Events and not showing up we will suspend your Member Perks after 3 missed Knitwise Events.
Member Inactivity
We have so many things going on in the group and understand that you will not be able to attend every single meeting. You are certainly not required to do so.
However, we want to maintain a group of active members. So, if you join the group on Meetup or become a paid Member and do not attend any meetings, pay membership dues or even look at our Meetup page, you will be removed after 1 year of inactivity. (Being active requires you to regularly view our Meetup page, not necessarily attend an event.) You will be notified through Meetup before removal so please make sure your email address is up-to-date.
Thank You
We are so happy to provide events to everyone in the Los Angeles area and want to continue to do so. We thank you for being mindful of our policies and being respectful of our members.
These policies are subject to change at any time.

While we do provide a number of free events for local knitters, we are at heart a membership group with annual dues and private events. When our events are posted they will be labelled in one of the following two ways, so read the event text carefully before you RSVP:
- Purl Jammer Events - These are events where anyone and everyone is allowed to come and knit without having to pay dues. Attend as many as you want to get to know us and see if this group is right for you. We love having you!
- Knitwise Member Events – These are our private events. Only current “paid” members will be allowed to participate in these events. As such you will not be able to sign up or attend without becoming a member of our group. Please see our membership page for details on becoming a member.
- If you sign up for a Knitwise event and are not a current paid member you will be automatically moved to the wait list and will not be allowed to attend.
Membership Fees
Annual membership is $10 due every January. Membership fees are paid yearly. This fee covers the costs for our web site, Meetup page, and our charity projects. Dues can be paid in a number of ways:
- Our preference is for you to bring $10 cash to an organizer or event host at any Meetup event. This avoids the complication of added fees and computer glitches.
- Alternately, send $10 electronically using Paypal/Venmo/Google Wallet to the Lead Organizer Alexandra Reese at her email [email protected]. Be sure to indicate that you're sending money to a friend so that no fees are taken out.
- You may also use the CHIP IN/Meetup Contribution button on our page. (The Chip-In window will pop up when RSVP-ing for an event through Meetup.) There is an additional processing fee of $1.50 so you will be required to pay $11.50 if you choose to pay through Meetup. This method is not preferred, as you will need to pay more.
- Additional fees for using either the Meetup or Paypal/Venmo/Google Wallet options are the responsibility of the member. We will not process your membership until we have received $10 from you. If a fee has been charged with your payment and it is not covered in the same payment, we will contact you to let you know of the additional cost and give you an opportunity to fix the issue.
- Please note that once paid Membership fees are NONREFUNDABLE. No exceptions.
