WLAK is not working directly with any of these charities, but they are worth looking into if you would like to donate to them on your own.

Craft'd With Love- Scarves for Chemo Patients
My name is Silvia Fuentes and I am co-founder of a project called Craft'd With Love. We hand knit scarves and donate them to patients going through chemotherapy treatments and other medical therapies during the cold winter months. Over 400 scarves have been donated since we began in 2013. We partner with organization like: St. Jude Children's Hospital, Pasadena Cancer Support Community, The Foundation for Living Beauty, The Beauty Bus Foundation, and Pasadena Ronald McDonald House.
This project began as a way for my sister and I to honor my mom's memory after losing her to lung cancer in 2013. We witnessed, first hand, the toll cancer takes on the patient as well as on their family. A kind gesture can do wonders for the human spirit and help keep hope alive in the most dire of situations. With this project we want to spread love and encouragement to patients and let them know we are cheering them on as they navigate through this scary journey. Our scarves give them a warm familiar object they can carry with them as they undergo treatment. Help us spread the word about "Craft'd With Love" by liking our Facebook & Instagram pages. Operation Gratitude- Scarves for Troops
To tell you a bit about us, Operation Gratitude is a 501 (c) (3), volunteer-based organization that sends care packages to the Military and First Responder Communities. Our mission is to say "Thank You" and express the appreciation of the American people to all who serve.
Every year we send over 200,000 individually addressed care packages to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines deployed overseas, to their children left behind, and to New Recruits, Veterans, First Responders, Wounded Heroes and their Caregivers. Each package contains food, hygiene, entertainment and handmade items, as well as personal letters of support. To date, we have sent more than 1,500,000 care packages! One of the most cherished items in our care packages are handmade scarves and hats. Each one is like a healing hug from home, and that can really make a difference for someone who is so far away. Our website is www.operationgratitude.com and I would appreciate it if you would please take a moment to and look at our site. Knitted Knockers
Knitted Knockers is a nonprofit that provides handmade prosthetic breasts to mastectomy patients. They organize knitters to make knitted cotton breasts that are lightweight, comfortable, and—most importantly—free to those who need them. Since 2010, they have received and distributed over 5000 knitted breasts.

No longer accepting donations
I've seen quite a few "viral" articles about some organizations needing knitted items. As they have received a lot of attention, they stop accepting donations. I will list them here as I find out about them.
A heartwarming story of an elderly man knitting sweaters for penguins has been sweeping the internet for a few years now. It received so much attention, however, that they no longer need penguin sweaters! All the penguins have been sufficiently bundled up, and all the incoming hand knits are not being used.
Huffington Post Article At this time, the center does not need any more penguin sweaters. |
